Queen Victoria's 63-year reign on the British throne would have been considerably shorter had any of the eight assassination attempts on her life succeeded.
A series of attacks
From Edward Oxford to Roderick Maclean, there were seven unconnected attempts to kill Queen Victoria. The first attempt, by Oxford in 1840, was carried out when the Queen was just 21 years old.
Despite the threats to her life, Queen Victoria remained a popular and respected figure. Her stoicism and refusal to be cowed by fear inspired many during her reign.
